Alberto Burri was born in Città di Castello (Perugia) in 1915. He died in Nice in 1995. He obtained a degree in medicine in 1940. He was taken prisoner by the Allies in Tunisia in 1943 because of he was a medical officer and he was sent to Hereford Camp, Texas, where he started painting. On his return to Italy in 1946 he settled in Rome and he dedicated himself to painting. Solo exhibitions have been dedicated to his works by important museums among which: Fine Art Center, Colorado Springs; Oakland Art Museum, Oakland; San Joaquin Pioneer Museum, Stockton (1955-1956); San Francisco Museum of Art, San Francisco; (1958); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Bruxelles; Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund (1959); Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires (1960); The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1963); Portland Art Museum, Portland; Kunsthalle, Darmstadt(1967); Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna, Turin (1971); Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris (1972); Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome (1976); Museum moderner Kunst, Palais Lichtestein, Wien (1981); Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus (1982); Museo Nazionale Complesso di san Vitale, Ravenna (1988); Castello di Rivoli, Rivoli (1991). He partecipated at the Venice Biennal in 1960, 1966, 1984 and 1988. Several retrospectives were devoted to the artist among which that realized in the occasion of the anniversary of his death at the Hall of Honor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Piazzale della Farnesina, Rome. In 2006 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid dedicated a solo axhibition to Alberto Burri.
